Investing in America, One Kid at a Time

So, the USDA has released their annual estimate of the horrendous cost of raising children today. and based on $235,000 per kid I guess I am a multimillionaire…

Well… I am guessing actually our cost is closer to the low end. And even though I now am footing the bill for 7 cellphones, 6 drivers of 3 cars and 3 kids in college this fall, I want to share the nobler side of all this.

Because, I am a true patriot – I am investing in America. And these kids will be taxpayers!  So, do the math:

Eight wonderful awesome kids: – 8

times

At least 40 years of employment: 8 x 40 = 320

times

times the median income for American households in 2011 – 63,000

of which about a third goes to property, income and sales taxes = 21,000

So, the McGuire stimulus package comes to about $6.7 million, and that is before you adjust for inflation… and the cost of caring for me when I am drooling.,.)

Makes me feel real important. That is a return on investment of about 30% for big families. And, by extension, if you raise only two kids, your potential investment is more of a zero sum game. Hmmmmm.

(And, yes, I know, you math people are going to tell me how my calculations are wrong…but if anything, I have underestimated the potential for some seriously good investments!)

About Kristen West Mcguire

I'm a wife and mom. Sometimes I work, and sometimes I homeschool and sometimes I just meddle, Although I worked at a military chapel for a few years and even taught CCD, most of my life I have been just a pew-sitting, kid-shushing Catholic mom. Since my conversion in 1992, I've been propositioned to join Opus Dei, Regnum Christi, the Neocatechumenal Way, Cum Christo (at least I think that is what Ultreya meant), and at least a few third orders, I just don't go for that extra stuff. I'm a Plain Jane Catholic.
